In 2001, the Lafayette Collection Essay Competition was held to recognize students and scholars who gained an understanding of the Marquis de Lafayette's life and times by using Cleveland State University Library's Lafayette Microfilm Collection of his papers at Château La Grange. A panel, composed of members of the Cleveland French Community and Cleveland State University, selected two winners, June K. Burton, Professor Emerita from the University of Akron for best scholarly essay, and Karen L. Mounsey, student from the University of Akron for best essay submitted by an undergraduate student.
