Agonistas

Mexican ritual and spectacle artists, Agonistas, create their three day long performance, Ensueño, in a Colonial Arcade storefront starting Monday May 5. Formed in January 1996 by Mario Lozano Alamilla, Agonistas is a group of artists with the intent of presenting events that challenge desire and destruction. Combining the energy of a carnival and the setting of a ritual, they use their bodies and voices to explore contemporary Mexican issues of violence, from guerilla activity to the racial situation in the Southwest. Influenced by the writings of Maria Sabina and Carlos Casteneda, Agonistas use an Ensueño, or illusion, as a catalyst for change within the turmoil of Mexican society.
