Jessica Buege
Los Angeles' Jessica Buege examines gender, labor and
bondage/escape in Dinner of Tantalus, at the Colonial Arcade on Saturday
May 10. She received her MFA from Claremont Graduate School and has
featured performance work extensively in California. In this conceptual,
introspective action, she wears a nylon suit and drags a 75 pound bag of
beef fat trimmings behind her while an audio track of Sartre's Being and
Nothingness is played. She proceeds to slice open the bag and fill her
suit with the beef. Buege uses the burden of the meat to not only represent
labor, but to objectify her body, while motivating the audience to question
their own subjectivity.
