Gillian Dyson

Performance artist Gillian Dyson of Hull, England makes her first trip to the U.S. to perform The Scold Saturday May 3 at the Colonial Arcade. She is the project coordinator at Hull Time Based Arts and has taught performance art at several universities in England. The Scold involves Dyson building a large leaning wall of discarded wooden planks, supporting it until she is crippled by it. The dual meaning of the word scold, a woman who constantly finds fault or a bridle to restrain speech, becomes an underlying motive of her task. Dyson's five hour performance is an ordinary act of labor in real time and demands the audience's full attention to realize the artist's ultimate purpose.
