Dumping Cars of Coal Into Hopper: The car dump is on the east side of the harbor. It empties the coal into the boats at the rate of twenty-five cars, or nearly 1,000 tons per hour. The coal is brought be trainloads as shown in view 6705. The cars, one at a time, are drawn onto the car dump by a cable. When in position on the cradle of the car dump, the car is kept in place by strong clamps and heavy iron cross bars against which it turns as it is lifted. The cradle with the car upon it is turned almost upside down, and the coal is quickly poured into the great hopper shown in this view to the left of the car and beside the track. The cradlw and car then return to their upright position, the hopper is lifted vertically, a door on the left side is opened autimatically as it reaches the chute above, and in a few seconds the thirty-eight tone of coal are in the hold of the vessel. The man on the platform above the boat operates the telescope. This is the part of the chute below the platform. By levers, he moves it in any desired direction and this places the coal just where needed in the hold of the vessel. Many boats take on fuel at the car dump, others are provided with fuel from the coal lighter while they are discharging ore. Cargoes of coal are loaded here. Trains of coal cars are transported on the car ferries to Canadian ports. Copyright 1905, by Keystone View Company.
