Project Description:
For most participating libraries, this project will be the first step taken into the digital environment. The participating libraries will acquire the hardware, software, and training to prepare them for a successful first effort at digitizing valuable primary resources relative to their library's history and role in the community. In order to capture the images of these materials, participating libraries will acquire digital scanners and digital cameras. Once these images have been scanned, the participants will forward them to the Ohio Memory Project at the Ohio State Historical Society. Through the Ohio Memory Project, these images will be made available to patrons all over Ohio through a key word searchable database. Since the Ohio Memory Project is being created to assist in the celebration of Ohio's Bicentennial in 2003, there will be considerable attention drawn to their Web site. This project will give the participating libraries "a place at the digital table" and will direct patrons, researchers, government officials, and the general public to the rich storehouse of materials currently housed at libraries. CAMLS will also sponsor a workshop on digitization featuring a nationally-recognized instructor. This workshop will teach the participants the best practices associated with a digitization project so that they will be able to perform their tasks in accordance with current industry standards. |
